The much awaited successor to the Fastwitch 4 aka Tiger has arrived. Its not Sir Alex Ferguson or Jose Mourinho or King Kenny Daglish, but its the Fastwitch 5 aka THE WHITE KNIGHT. The Fastwitch 5 will be another Thousand Mile Horse (千里馬) for those runners who are already running with the Fastwitch series. It was officiallly released in USA during the Feb 2011 timeframe and now it has galloped into the Malaysia soil.

Saucony is hacking heels again with the Fastwitch 5 going to a 4mm drop (from heel to forefoot drop), and that it's a feature that many runners now want. This basically give the Fastwitch 5 a lower profile design and with a faster and more efficient heel to forefoot transition.

The Fastwitch 5 shoe is lightweight and responsive for fast training days to fast race days. It sports a breathable mesh upper with a dual-density SSL EVA midsole. The XT-900™ outsole of the Fastwitch 5 provides enhanced traction and better durability (compare to Fastwitch 3 and 4) Besides the enhancements, Saucony had maintained the ever popular drainage system on the outsole of the Fastwitch 5, allowing water to drain out when running under a wet condition.

Designed to be a racing/training hybrid, the main change is increased weight and midfoot support. The change is technically good featuring stronger midfoot support and the improved torsion control is very apparent, plus transition to toe-off will be excellent.

According to studies, compression clothing offers real benefits, like improving muscle recovery after workouts or helping you to run faster. Still, it pays to suit up only where you’ll need it – for example, wearing a compression top won’t benefit your running as much as compression pants.

Athletes who did sprints and plyometrics in a lower body compression garment reported 43 per cent less soreness after 24 hours than their unrestricted counterparts did.

Athletes who wore a full body compression suit for 24 hours after high-intensity exercise had up to 20 per cent lower levels of muscle damage.

Run Faster
Runners who wore knee high compression stockings ran as much as 6.1 per cent faster on a treadmill than those who wore regular running socks.

The elasticity of a long sleeved compression top gives you more control as you extend your arms. This may help in your throwing.

Conserve Energy
Athletes in compression pants covered up to 34 per cent more distance at faster speeds in circuit training. The pants help conserve energy.

CW-X EXPERT compression tight (Review)

Having used the 2XU compression and was very satisfied with it, I stumbled upon CW-X by Wacoal where a friend was telling me that CW-X is even more efficient. And when I got the chance to get hold of a pair of long tights, I decided to wear and give it a try in my 42k run during the recent ENR 2010.

The first impression when I wore the Expert was I felt the material is thicker, hence it is also slightly warmer but not to the extent of having an uncomfort feeling. So from this perspective there is nothing to be concern of. It wont be too hot, trust me.

In terms of the fitting, the size S fits me very well. So for any compression apparels, make sure u wear at least one size down from your normal running apparels. The tightness provide me with a very good feel that very muscle compartment were very well supported. The graphics design of the Expert plays a very important role from a support perspective. Its just not for design purposes and look good but were well positioned at all the key muscle areas.

The most significant support is the "X" cross section on the knee area. Must ensured that your knee patella is centered on the "X" for maximum support for the knee and muscle zone around that area. When on the run, I felt that it holds the knee and its muscle very well, minimzsing any movement and hence reduce the production of lactic acid. Those who have knee problem or injury can finally eliminate using knee guard or knee belt. Just put the Expert on and immediately it gets to work and support your knee.

Next area I will focus on is the support at the thigh area. If you take a closer look at the design of the Expert again, the graphics runs up along the ITB area (Iliotibial band) and all the way up to the hip/waist. And then another short extension towards the back of the thigh.

First we take a look at the ITB area. Again when on the run, I felt the group of muscle fiber that runs along the outside of the thigh were well supported. Even when I started to increase my pace, I dont feel any strain at all. With the support and protection around the thigh area, it will definitely minimize the chances of having ITB injury when one perform tempo runs or speedwork. The short extension towards the back of the thigh is merely for extra support purposes to ensure that the surrounding area around the thigh (even at the back) are well protected to minimize cramps and injury (after prolong workout)

The graphics then goes all the way down to the calf area and this is very obvious that its meant to support the calf muscles. The support and protection is reasonably well but my preference is that the construction of the graphics can be tigher (to my liking) But dont get me wrong here as the support of the muscle still works extremely well during my run.

The last piece I need to inform is that the elastic band around the waistline. It does help to provide some form of lumbar support. Hence one may not experience back sore while on a long run.

Overall I find that the CW-X Expert is able to cover and support almost all of the critical muscle zones from waist downwards till the calf area. As I said earlier, the "X" cross section is important during fitting and if one had a wrong sizing that would result in the "X" slipping upwards or downwards. On another note, the graphics constructions of the CW-X Expert are targeted for runners seeking support for their knees, meaning that they can train on long distances without using knee guards or knee belts. Efficient runners may want to stick to 2XU.

This brief review only covered the time when I use it during a run or training. The next review will be on post training or race recovery where I will wear it during my sleep. This part is as important too as speeding up post race muscle fatigue recovery is key to our performance in the next workout.

NEWTON ~ Science In Motion

The shoe was put into an acid test today, after I ran with it occasionally for the past 3 weeks. Plus there was a NEWTON Shoe Trial session for runners participating in the McD Olympic Run 2009.

Why I said acid test was that today's race will be a 7k fast and furious event. The shoe itself will be push to the limit by me and by those runners wearing it for the trial session. I guessed this is one of the best way to wear test a shoe and check on its performance (besides doing a long run like a 20k with it). Wearing it and do a slow jog over a very short distance do not do any justice at all. You may feel comfortable with it but will not find the true potential or flaws of the shoe itself.

After the race, I personally found that the shoe is pretty responsive and will basically guide a runner to transition from mid foot to a forefoot striker. Especially when your strike is fast and hard, the front part of the shoe will keep pushing and lifting you forward. That basically provide better efficiency in my strike and therefore less energy is used from strike to strike. And I kind of find the technic of running forefoot which is the most natural way to run, it is also the fastest and most efficient way to run.

I am not the only one who have such experience today, but out of 10 runners who had a trial session with the shoe, I must gladly said 80% gave me similar feedback that the shoe is very efficient. They are able to transition to midfoot/forefoot running, a technique and position that helps keep you running more efficiently, injury-free and faster, no matter the distance.

Will do another wear test on the shoe, and the next time will be a 20k run and see how it will perform over a longer distance and at a slower pace. One other thing that I may want to highlight is that the shoe may have a disadvantage when it comes to the width of the toebox. A runner which have a broad feet may not fit into the shoe very well hence could experience discomfort and may even to the extent of getting blisters. But will definitely get a runner with wide feet to test it out later.
